Geekmom and Pink do RI Comic-Con 2017

Pink turned 14 in September.  14!!  When did I become a parent to a 14 year old!!  Crap, I am getting old!

She wanted to do Comic-Con in November with her friends and we decided that tickets to Comic-Con would make a great present.  She wanted to get into cosplay and decided to do Lapis from Steven Universe.

Lapis-deko

She searched the internet and found all the items she needed.  Amazon Prime FTW.

So, yesterday we headed out to Comic-Con.  We met up with 4 of her friends and two other moms and proceeded to wait in line outside.

My view for most of the Con

Luckily, her wings folded back so I was able to help her get through the crowds a little easier.  I also got to hold the wings when things got tight or when she wanted to explore a vendor.

Just here to hold her wings, folks

While we were at the Con, we also took some time to do some advertising for DDO.

This was my first Comic-Con type thing.  Pink had a complete blast.  She was the only Lapis there and got tons of photo requests.  Honestly, I prefer Pax or Gaming Conventions.  I am not into meet and greets.  There were a few panels I was interested in, but the teenagers were not.  And I was there to make sure Pink was safe.  All the other teens ran off, but I was happy that she stayed with me the whole time.  Although, it could have been that I had the wallet and held her wings……

I did get to have my picture taken with the TARDIS!!!!

She did not want to paint her whole body.  The blue bandana was there to cover her scar from two years ago.  She did end up relaxing and taking it off.  The skirt came up high enough to cover.  Very few 14 year old girls want to show a vertical scar when they are trying to feel special.

And feel special she did.  She got quite a few pictures taken with other people.  Her favorite was a little girl who thought that Pink was Sadness from Inside/Out.  Pink just made her happy and said nothing.

Ultimately, it was a great present and a great intro to Cosplay.  I was happy that her first experience went so well.  Even her friends who had cosplayed here before were surprised.

Me, however, I cannot wait until PaxEast in April.  Is anyone going??????

Harry Potter Quote Help

“I’m a what?” gasped Harry.

“A wizard, o’ course,” said Hagrid, sitting back down on the sofa, which groaned and sank even lower, “an’ a thumpin’ good ‘un, I’d, say, once yeh’ve been trained up a bit. With a mum an’ dad like yours, what else would yeh be?” (4.63-64)

This geek parent is dropping her gamer-child off at Girl Scout Camp tomorrow for a week.  It is a Harry Potter themed week called Muggle No More.

This is the longest she will have ever been away from home and is starting to get a bit nervous.  I want to put some quotes from the Harry Potter books in her bags.  I am going to separate her outfits by day and would like to slip the quotes into each bag.

I will still be writing cards/camp emails so she has something delivered but I thought having something handwritten in her bag each morning would be sweet.

The first quote that I have is by Albus Dumbledore,

“There are all kinds of courage,” said Dumbledore, smiling. “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom.”

I think that quote is a great reminder to be the great kid that she is.  Kind to others.  Sweet.  Courageous.

I am going to miss my little gamer girl this week.  I have been having so much fun introducing her to DDO.  Sad that I will not have her to play with this week.  I will miss her in game tells while I am in a raid.

Any help from my fellow geeks out there?

Confessions of a Geek Mom

Confessions of a Geek Mom

I am a geek. I am a mom. We are raising geeks in our house. I love Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Firefly(yes, I am still bitter) and a host of other geek movies and shows.
I play online video games. I love Dungeons and Dragons Online(DDO), but have played Star Wars, LOTRO, Age of Conan and a few others. I have used my eldest daughter run my character through open areas in DDO while I worked on dinner.
I have played table top D&D and Vampire the Masquerade. I met my husband playing D&D. He was my dungeon master. (I giggle typing that…sounds dirty). I have been to conventions. I have played in LARPS.
My geek status is not sci-fy based. I also am a fiber geek. I crochet and knit. I spin yarn with a lovely Kromski Minstrel spinning wheel. I dye yarn in my kitchen. I especially like to create geeky designs. I just finished knitting a GOT-inspired shawl called Stormborn that I plan on painting to match the wings of a character in my favorite set of novels. Spinning yarn is not just the newest hobby; it is assuring my role in a post-apocalyptic society.
I read paranormal romance novels. Yup…more geek. Thank heavens for Kindles. No one can see the smut I read.
I am raising a daughter who has read all the Harry Potter books and is excited to go to Girl Scout Camp this summer for a Muggle No More session for a whole week of Harry Potter-themed camp. She is hoping that they are all sorted into Houses.
I have tried blogging before but got bored. Plus, my first blog had a bit to do with my younger daughter’s struggles with autism. I got worried that she would use “THE GOOGLE” when she was older and see those posts. So I stopped out of respect for her privacy. So I thought about blogging about all my crafty geekness but then had to have two shoulder surgeries, so that fell aside.
But after reading my friend’s blogs about gaming, life with gaming, friends and gaming, I decided that I really could combine them all in one blog. And now that I am friends with “THE TWITTER”, I can post to more people. I am not going to be as famous as Geoff Hanna but who needs fanbois and fangrls?
I just want to have fun.
